The Community Education Computer Society (CECS) is an ICT training NGO which was established in April 1985 for the technologically empowerment of the historically disadvantaged. The Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA) provided CECS with funding to implement an ICT Literacy project in seven countries in the Southern African region (Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia). At the same time, the Meraka Institute was engaged in the establishment of Free Knowledge Communities. The initiative aims to make it possible for anyone, anywhere to gain access to free knowledge and free cultural resources for any purpose, via various media as required by the local circumstances.
OSISA has provided support for the development of a Free Knowledge and ICT Literacy portal to be implemented by CECS in collaboration with Meraka Institute.
